About
The Elements of Indigenous Style: A Guide for Writing By and About Indigenous Peoples (Brush Education, 2018) is, by its publisher’s account, the first published, comprehensive style guide for Indigenous writing. Its author, Gregory Younging (Opaskwayak Cree Nation), was the longtime publisher of Theytus Books — the first Indigenous-owned publishing house in Canada — and developed the guide from that house’s editorial practice. The book sets out twenty-two style principles, plus guidance on culturally appropriate publishing: collaborating with Indigenous Peoples, seeking the advice of Elders, and respecting Oral Traditions and Traditional Knowledge.
In the commons it appears as a reference cited by other guides — the Native Governance Center Style Guide names it as a primary source — rather than as a guide the commons indexes term by term.

This is a paid book, so the commons cites it only and never reproduces its text. Host posture is link-out-only: readers are pointed to the publisher’s listing (linked) for the authoritative work. The link above is to Brush Education’s current (2nd edition) listing; the work cited in the commons is the 2018 first edition.
